From country to city, acoustic to electronic guitar, Max Alexander is certainly one to watch over these coming months… With the warm summer nights being more promising as lockdown is eases, Max’s latest single Stay Where You Are is that encapsulation the last few months for all of us in Max’s quintessential song title. To set the tone, we are introduced by glorious synths, gritty guitar chords and a dominant guitar riff which rises in dynamic throughout the track. Straight away, the song’s verse gave me a Tame Impala kind of vibe, with the electrifying drum pattern and sexy guitar; which I love. The synth of the track accompanies the melody and vocal pattern perfectly! The instrumentation comes in great numbers in the chorus to connote the feeling of fulfilment and is diminished to a delightful melody from the piano. The vocal melody and harmonies are astounding and illustrate the song incredibly well. The track as a whole delves into the iconic 80s era. With its stunning synth and electronic guitar sounds, making it distinguished and cemented throughout. Max implements the alternative electronic genre firmly into the tracks’ identity and produces a great balance of the elements of folk, acoustic and electronic vibes. When creating the song’s theme, Max states: “Stay Where You Are is about being there for that someone you love, and being there for yourself. It’s written about a recent break up, and also about mental health, combining the two from past experiences.” This is purely exhibited in the structure of the song, and the perfect placement of the instrumentation connotes the idea of a rollercoaster of stages a couple may experience during a relationship. The constant repetition of the lyrics ‘Stay away from the light, make it through the night’ brings a sense of control and paints a honest view of mental health… knowing that you have to fight those inner demons one day. Max demonstrates his fantastic artistry with this track and the year for extraordinary music from him looks very promising. We here at Whisper can not wait to hear more! ‘Stay Where You Are’ is out now!

We all wonderfully dream; it’s a sense of escapism, whether it’s the withdrawal from the harrowing reality of life or a tiptoe into our mind’s breathtaking desires… Duvet Daze’s woozy debut single ‘Dreaming’ lends us a helping hand to delve into the sweet atmosphere of daydreaming, allowing us to take a moment to chill, relax and take our minds off the the chaos that the world brings in everyday life.
This crafted lo-fi production provides a dazed bedroom pop experience which can be related to artists such Men I Trust, Soccer Mommy and Clairo. The song is born with a sensational jangly guitar introduction and, for me, connoted feelings of being on a tropical island. The guitar is accompanied with a stunning prominent drum pattern and strong vocal melody which reflects the guitar melody perfectly. We are instantly transported into a dream-like state when a noteworthy solo riff is exhibited by a synth sound, this is then accompanied by moody downtempo beats, adding great texture and dynamic. The vocal harmonies are sprinkled sweetly at the end of the track and are truly astonishing. The song in its structure is very simplistic, but is used effectively. The youthful, gritty vocals connote a melancholic encounter of feeling at a complete loss and not possessing any hope for what the future might mysteriously bring. The infectious groove of the whole song is prodigious and firmly transports you into dreaming while listening. The narrative expressed through the wondrous instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics exhibits a metaphor of dreaming in itself, the simplicity of the first section of the song represents a strong narrative of the reality we all face which is then juxtaposed with the introduction of the synths and stunning dynamic accompaniment representing advancing into an atmosphere of escapism and daydreaming. Duvet Daze – also known as Mia – expresses the meaning behind the track: “Creating a song about daydreaming is my way of coping during these strange times, and it’s with my best friend and twin sister, Tuesday.” From seeing Mia grace the Falmouth music scene with her beautiful sister, Tuesday, in their band Mia Tuesday, to her elevation into the coming of age artist we know her to be today, it will be exciting to see this dreamy track have an all-round success. ‘Dreaming’ is now available on all streaming platforms! 'I Opened My Heart’ was the first time we got a glimpse of the amazing artistry from independent musician, Theya LeRoy. She has now made a gracious return with her latest single, ‘It Hurts’ which has transformed into an alluring twin of ‘I Opened My Heart’ being a melancholic song but with an empowering sultry twist. This remarkable song paints a narrative of dressing up in your finest, being seated in an extravagant club bar, the lights dimming down to reveal a piercing spotlight exhibiting this song in all its glory.
We are immediately struck by captivating power chords presented within the sharp violin melody which is aided by a synth accompaniment. A prominent and daring drum pattern enters with the fascinating synth in the verses. The chorus is introduced with the return of the strings which is then accompanied by an entrancing piano, synth and a drum pattern that changes in rhythm and tempo. As the song draws to an end, the power chords seep into the synth leaving them with full control of the journey of the song with the 12 bar blues bassline assisting sensationally. The vocals contain elements of jazz and a distinct Amy Winehouse feel which is stunning and very unique. Traditional elements of house and jazz have been beautifully meshed into one and each have their own moments to shine throughout the whole song. The lyrics and instrumentation juxtapose one another throughout as the lyrics present a narrative of mourning for a relationship and the instrumentation is crafted into a dance like fantasy. However, this is purely magical as it allows a listener to feel liberated to dance away the heartbreak. Theya expresses the reasoning behind creating the track: “Yes, it does hurt when someone betrays you, but it is important to remember that these feelings won’t last forever, we are all strong enough to overcome all the bad times. It is a fight within ourselves. It is only you who can liberate yourself from all those sad thoughts which poisoned your life, stopped it from evolving.” With a musician so interested in applying vibrant components of different genres such as house and jazz into her music with a powerful narrative, it will be compelling to identify where the singer-songwriter will go next in her journey as an artist. ‘It Hurts’ is available to dance the night away to now. Following the sensational creation of the EP ‘Here & Now’ in 2019, alternative folk artist Ollie Dixon returns to the music scene but with a surprising elevated twist. The new tracks, ‘Interlude, I / Time’ present another fascinating side to Ollie’s musicianship and advancing his artistry gloriously. Although much like ‘Here & Now’ with both songs containing acoustic guitars and finger picking, the new EP is almost like a distant relative and provides a fabulous new direction of electronics and diversity…
Time Time embodies a clean and crunchy electronic atmosphere which is astonishing to hear. We are introduced into the song with a prominent guitar which is bewildering in delays, tremolo and reverb. The song instantly connotes a dystopian feeling but constructs an atmosphere of comfort and reflection into its narrative. Although the song’s structure is simplistic, it is truly remarkable how the instrumentation, especially the guitar has been stunningly pushed in its traditional boundaries to create different and diverse sounds using the support of electronic devices. The distant vocals are unique and with the support of the phenomenal layered harmonies add texture and style to the song’s identity. The narrative explores the meaning of time and how to value the time we have. Ambience, folk and electronic elements have all been blended seamlessly to create such a wonderful first track of this amazing EP. Interlude, I This song juxtaposes its counterpart and exhibits a new elevation in Ollie’s artistry which is thrilling to see. This song is honestly so stunning to hear and reminds me of watching a sunset or sunrise. We are instantly introduced to the song with an electric guitar running through a pedal board with elements such as delay and reverb to add to its identity. The guitar is sweetly aided by a looped violin element that has had a plethora of mixing and production to create such a unique concept. It is important to understand the song’s illustration in its entirety with layers upon layers of many different sounds to create such a perfect interlude. Ollie goes above and beyond in this track providing sounds such as birds, people talking, a watch noise and a chicken and has embedded them with extraordinary effects. We have to commend Ollie for stepping out of the traditional instrumentation of music and exhibiting that everyday objects can have value of sound if created successfully. The song presents so many different and unique parts within itself that for six minutes of listening, you are truly invested in the narrative. When creating the EP, Ollie expresses: “I learnt a lot about “isolation” in this lockdown, time alone with your thoughts can be a struggle but there’s a strange pattern of comfort in this fabric of chaos but without it, I wouldn’t have written these new songs or learnt about mixing / production so I’m pretty grateful for it all.” Ollie has created such an incredible narrative and experience for a listener in this fantastic EP and we are extremely excited for him to reveal any new directions of artistry he may add to his already amazing musicianship. ‘Interlude, I / Time’ is available on all streaming platforms from today. If Joey Landreth, Chris Stapleton and John Mayer are artists that you cherish dearly, Jake Loosemore is an artist for you who brings a unique breathtaking talent to the music industry with his new single. ‘Better Me’ is a kind hearted, free spirited sensational song that is the perfect backing track to accompany a sweet summer’s day.
We are introduced delightfully into the song by an illustrious melodic line played by the guitar and piano that marry one another perfectly. The vocals are simply outstanding and so comforting to hear. Multiple distinguished guitar tracks are astounding providing texture and diversity within the song. The verses are stripped back with the lead guitar exhibiting beautiful chords alongside the piano and vocals. The chorus evolves into a powerful narrative with the instrumentation releasing an embellished prominence. Lyrics such as “I will find my own way home” connotes the feeling of breaking free. The guitar solo in the bridge is a strong statement that and gloriously stands out within the song. The harmonies that are sweetly scattered within the song melt in your mouth and compliment each other wonderfully. All the elements presented in this song have been beautifully exhibited to praise one another and to provide an excellent narrative. Canadian Singer-songwriter Liam Duncan from the amazing band Bros. Landreth provides the piano chords and wonderful backing vocals. Admiration for Jake’s musicianship should be acknowledged as this amazing song was written, recorded and produced by himself. Award winning mix engineer David Benyamin from Paris contributes to the astonishing balance of sound. Jake expresses: “The track was written about a year ago, and I’ve played it lots live ever since as it means a lot to me.” This incredible song was the front runner for Jake’s upcoming summer tour which unfortunately has been postponed. However, this song possesses its own glorious spotlight and should firmly be celebrated. Summer is swiftly approaching with the evenings light-toned, a warm breeze filling the air and the urge for a sense of adventure escalating in our bodies. Although this may not be the summer we were intending, the debut track ‘Innocents’ from Will O’Hea (under the exquisite name of Safe Lander), invites you to feel at one with summer and generates the excitement for the arrival of this prominent season. If you delve into artists such as My Bloody Valentine, Tame Impala and Radiohead, Safe Lander will be an artist to keep your eyes firmly upon…
The track starts with an arpeggiated piano melody which is accompanied by a sturdy bassline, which for some reason reminds me of the intro from The Who by Baba O’Riley; both outstanding. We are then invited into the verse by the drums and the powerful ambient guitar chords that accompany the sweet but soulful vocal line. The synths are sprinkled throughout the pre-chorus and the end of the song, impacting the texture of the song immensely. The second verse is fully stripped back to only consisting of the drums, bass and vocals giving you a diverse atmosphere of sound and feeling. This track strongly connotes the feeling of summer, sitting on the beach, a cool drink in hand as the sun glistens on your skin. With influences taken from a broad variety of music genres, such as shoegaze, prog rock, dream pop and funk. All these elements have been blended to seamlessly create such a wonderful track. The song ends with an astounding synth solo which was provided by Will’s brother, Jack who semi-improvised the solo on a beautiful sounding Roland Juno 106 Synthesizer. Will expresses: “Innocents began as a simple four-note piano trill, which ended up being used as a kind of harmonic anchor throughout the song, tucked away behind the layers of sampled drums and guitar textures, although it was never originally intended to be a dance beat of sorts.” Jack O’Hea returns once again with his astonishing skill set of mixing and mastering the track which sits stunningly in the ear. The narrative of the track in the lyrics exhibits a journey of self discovery and authority to be at one with yourself. Will continues: “The song’s lyrics are a kind of pep talk to myself more than anything else, that’s where they come from, the need to tell yourself that something’s wrong and you need to take some responsibility for it but give yourself some slack as well.” With Will dominantly focusing on one direction with this debut single and articulating his sound from what was once dense layered bedroom solos to a vigorous artistic identity with Safe Lander. We can expect to experience a visceral experience of music and sound prominently presented in this track and the string of releases yet to come. With an EP scheduled for end of this year, we hope to see the multi-instrumentalist captivate listeners and be a one to watch in the music industry. The fierce, passionate and outstanding half Lioness, half songbird from Devon, Yazzy has entered the music industry and has notably gained a distinguished reception. With amazing achievements such as being featured on BBC1 Spotlight, BBC Introducing, Capital FM and Heart FM South West already under her belt, she’s just getting started and WHISPER are extremely excited to see what happens next.
With her new single, ‘I’m Choosing Me’, Yazzy has established a liberating powerful break up ballad that invites you to overcome the intimidating fear of letting someone go and immerses you completely to bring yourself at the forefront of your decisions. This sensational song fiercely emerges with a dominant powerful pop chord structure which is beautifully presented in the piano. This chord structure is breathtakingly married by her astounding vigorous vocal melody with the deliverance of independence and empowerment at the forefront of her meaning within the song. The remarkable string accompaniment enters dominantly into the track during the first chorus and elevates the texture of the song, with significant use of word painting to connote the idea that she has chosen herself and has risen above the painful situation that has once entered her life. The fabulous layer of vocal harmonies are stunningly sugared throughout the song and aid the vocal melody gracefully. The lyric that sounds out in this song: “’I’ll think ’bout me, you think ’bout you…go find a girl who’ll do all the things you want her to. That’s just not me and I’m not for you’,” this is bold, confident and influential. Every element of this outstanding song is polished and intertwined with one another and is carved to exhibit such an elegant narrative. Throughout her defining career as an independent artist, Yazzy has truly found her powerful and captivating sound, performing to impressingly deliver, captivate and encourage her audience to become an empowering entity that she fully reflects as an artist. She expresses: “It’s very relatable for me, It’s a liberating track to give you the motivation to put yourself first.” With many festival appearances such as Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage and Boardmasters, as well as supporting industry greats: Paloma Faith and Tom O’Dell. We hope once the pandemic is over to see Yazzy gracefully enter the stage once again as she was due to tour with Three Degrees later on in the year. Someone truly to keep an eye on. ‘I’m Choosing Me’ is a stunning staple of a pop song the industry is in need of and is available on all streaming platforms now. Excitement, motion, uncertainty and energy are the four components of life that one should endure throughout their journey on this earth, however the path that is presented to us unravels. ‘Alive’ reveals the true reflection of realism that life unambiguously provides and accommodates these four components senstationally. Up and comer Jake Pavey has created a song that is exactly what it says on the tin, alive.
We are immediately introduced by a chilling guitar melody which invites a vibrant fast pace drum pattern to set the scene and to accompany the guitar successfully. A distinguished second guitar is set in motion and is colossally striking in its appearance. Each leading guitar solo presented within the song is outstanding and creates a prevalent experience for an audience. Skill and musicianship of the guitar and drums are effortlessly embedded into the track making each section prominent, hard and extremely fulfilling. The track bestows the same guitar motif which is weaved in and out of the track and generates the motif to acquire numerous illustrious identities. The eerie vibrato of synth-like sounds in what seems to be a bridge keeps you second guessing to where the song goes next which is purely astonishing. As we progress into the conclusion of the track the drum pattern advances into halftime using more of the cymbals as an aid to guide the narrative, the prominent guitar follows to make you feel alive. The finally exhibits string-like sounds that carry the melody and to connote the feeling that we have gone full circle in the journey of this amazing track. The mix is astounding and creates a platform for the track to be elevated upon. This song is vigorous and can be the background for any empowering notion. The instrumentation is superbly crafted to possess its own sense of self in the track. The mixture of synth, drums and guitar all perfectly marry one another and present a hard rock experience. The track simply paints a narrative of its own, without the need for lyrical content as an aid to connote meaning. This song withdraws your soul from your body and transports you into another domain which is completely up to your imagination. For me I immediately gained the concept of Underworld or Lara Croft in confrontational combat. With an abundance of emerging talent arriving substantially onto the music scene, Jake Pavey is one of them making his mark with this thrilling song. ‘Alive’ is out now available on all streaming platforms. The unpredictability of this everlasting pandemic has made people feel undoubtedly frightened and worried for what the future brings. However, the solo debut of Tom Skinner’s new single ‘Wrap Me Up’ encourages you to fail to remember these emotions of bleakness and desolation. The song fabricates a magical fantasy which wraps you up to make you feel as though you are whole and not alone.
If you haven't stepped outside in a while, ‘Wrap me up’ has you covered as the start of the song connotes a feeling of walking through an esoteric forest with the sun peaking through the trees. The accompaniment of the guitar structure, mystical synth and a unique streamlike water sample sparkles within the song. The drums are introduced so sweetly and accompany the melody lines perfectly. The guitar riff is prominent at the forefront of the song being animated right after the first chorus. The harmonies in this song are something to be commended for, they are simply heavenly and have been layered elegantly and sprinkled throughout the track. The guitar is escorted back into the song alongside the other accompaniment and vocals in the bridge which presents a beautiful daydream and ends with a satisfied fulfillment. This song presents an empowering honesty that encourages a person to be accepted into others' love. With lyrics such as ‘Holding half of a whole’ there is a sugared demand for the other half to be filed. The lyric ‘Wrap me up and tuck me in’ is so prominent in the song as it connotes feelings of innocence and vulnerability within an entity. The goosebump effect with the lyric ‘Feel my voice underneath your skin’ invites the love to be a necessity in one's body. The repetition of ‘That i'm not alone’ is a statement that needs to be confessed. All the lyrics are sung wholeheartedly adding more emotion in the track. Praise and recognition for Tom as he has produced this track and it sits faultless within the mix. This track includes every distinguishable element you would expect a pop song to encounter in its journey. It is a truly beautiful narrative expressed by the lyrics and the instrumentation within this sensational song. From representing other artists with his outstanding piano playing, to transforming into his own frontman in the blissful Blush, to this sweetened solo adventure. It is truly astonishing to see Tom’s journey fabricate and adapt into something that is so unique and wonderful. This presents an elevation of the artist Tom is truly meant to be and we should be exhilarated by his up and coming artistry in the future. ‘Wrap Me Up’ is available on all platforms from today. It's two am, the night is drowsy and you have just had a feud with your significant other. You scramble to get some shoes on with tears fogging your eyes, you push the door, step out into the pouring rain and start to walk away with the muffled screams of your significant other trailing behind you but you continue on walking. This is exactly the narrative my brain imagined when the first few chords of NANA’s new song ‘The Weight’ transpired into my ears. I immediately thought this song would fit perfectly into a scene from a romance/break up novel, simply astounding.
She continues to surprise us with the soft and dreamy accompaniment marrying her soulful melody lines right from the start. Her honeyed harmonies peppered throughout the track are such a solace to her defying lyrics. The piano carries the modern soul and jazz in its chords, the guitar in this track is more prominent with the glorious riff situated in the second verse being the icing on the cake. Credit to Jack O’Hea (Kirk Francis, Long Tonic, Hexposuer, Strsome,) again for producing such an amazing mix. The solidarity of the whole song as an entity is a comfort blanket to those who believe they are alone in their suffering of heartbreak. Raw, heartfelt and vulnerable are the themes that are attentive in the exploration of the song. The songwriting is simply spellbinding. She asks questions ‘Do you need me to carry your pain?’ and ‘Do you know quite the danger you are?’ The boldness in her energy is very much at the forefront of her lyrical expression. ‘I'm still shedding the weight’ is a staple of her honesty. “This song was maybe the hardest one to write yet, but once I cracked it open, the music poured out of me. It was healing to write about such a difficult experience, but that’s what music is for right? And I hope that anyone listening to it who connects to that feeling of catharsis knows I’m with them. It’s a reminder to allow yourself to feel hurt for a moment without self-judgement and patiently heal because you owe it to yourself to start living confidently again with a whole lot of self-love and self-belief.” – NANA With a successful debut with ‘W Hotel’ grabbing the recognition of radio stations from across the UK, NANA has fabricated her return which forever perpetuates her evolution as an artist. With the unpredictability of the global pandemic giving us time to reflect upon ourselves, I believe it is in this time that we be honest with our emotions and our wellbeing. With NANA being an empowering lead within herself and her artistry, she is someone to look up to and embrace wholeheartedly. ‘The Weight’ is out now. |
